game fishing in New Zealand

GAME FISHING

New Zealand is known world wide as a Big Game Fishing destination.
Thousands of hopeful fishermen turn up every year with the dream of landing the big marlin, broadbill swordfish or battle the mighty mako shark.
Only by using the most efficient technique, these anglers get their dream fulfilled.

The old fashioned way of catching marlin and other game fish in New Zealand, as in other places around the world, is to troll plastic lures from a huge game fishing vessel.
In our opinion this is an old fashion way of actively chasing game fish. It has several major disadvantages.
First of all, predators always follow bait. With all the plastic lures set, boats need to cruise at a certain speed to make the lures work correctly. This means leaving stationary bait schools and thereby the predators.
Another huge disadvantage for the plastic lure fisherman is hook-up rate. The best skippers and experienced game fishermen, can with a bit of luck hook every third fish that strikes, where the average boat trolling lures gets an average of one out of five fish hooked.

In our opinion live baiting is the best way of enticing a game fish to bite and the hook-up rate is close to 100%. We find the bait, fish with the bait present, and stay with the bait.
We have developed new techniques to fish our live baits, and so far our success has been impressive. As the big game fish we encounter in New Zealand are all being caught close to shore, this has proved to be a Mecca for trailer boats to fish the deep blue water.

When hooked up to a fish, the smaller boat has a major advantage when chasing a hooked fish. No need to back down on a fish, where the angler usually hasn’t got a clue whether the fish is still hooked or not.
The angler has constantly got a visual of what is going on with his hooked fish, and is therefore a lot more integrated in the whole game. Off course another advantage for the angler is the charter price. Get 4 days on the water instead of one for the same price.

Land based game fishing is something we exclusively offer our clients. Surfcasting for huge bronze whaler sharks is something we have done for years, and we have established a well known reputation for landing several sharks over 200kg fishing from the beach. This is a mind blowing experience for everybody involved, and it’s pushing the limit of what can be done with a rod and reel.
