blue marlin

FACT FILE

Size:
120-500kg.
Tackle:
14-18wt, biggest, strongest gear on the market...
Season:
Jan-April.
Locations:
Bay of Plenty, Bay of Islands, Far North, Three Kings Islands.

New Zealand rarely sees a small blue marlin.
This big predator hunts the open ocean, and usually anglers targeting blue marlin will go far off shore. As the Blue marlin is a much harder fighter than the Striped, it requires exceptional skills from angler and skipper to land a big blue marlin on fly.
It has yet to be done in New Zealand waters, but why not be the first. Blue Marlin is regularly seen in the spread while teasing for striped marlin, and they usually dwarf the smaller stripeys.

Black marlin

FACT FILE

Size:
Too big to way too big.
Tackle:
Not suitable for fly fishing in NZ
Season:
Jan-May.
Locations:
Bay of Plenty to Three Kings islands. Hang around inshore reefs over summer.

In New Zealand we only get the huge female blacks coming in. The average weight exceeds 300kg, which makes them impossible for the fly fisherman to conquer.
To specifically chase black marlin on fly, the east coast of Australia is the place to be.
